Well that was fast! After spending the night at the U.S. Penitentiary in Atlanta -- the same place where Charles Ponzi, the man who gave his name to the kind of scheme that Bernie Madoff ran for years, did time -- Bernie Madoff is enroute to his final home, the Butner Correctional Complex in Butner, NC.
Atlanta, alas, was just a holding pen. In-transit prisoners like Madoff are usually housed in 56 square foot isolation cells for up to 8 weeks at a time, but Bernie was there for barely 24 hours. While overnight Atlanta, he was in the company of at least 2 "landsmen" including:
Don Siegelman - former governor of Alabama. Convicted of bribery, conspiracy and mail fraud, Siegelman's conviction is widely believed to be wrongful and engineered by Karl Rove. Siegelman is currently working to see Karl Rove held in contempt for refusing to testify before a House committee that is investigating his conviction.
Lou Pearlman, creator of the Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync and other boy groups. Pearlman perpetrated one of the longest running Ponzi Schemes in America, stealing $500 million from family, friends, strangers and banks. Pearlman only got a 25 year sentence.
Buttner Correctional Complex, NC
Among the well-known criminals being held at Butner are: John Rigas, founder of Adelphia Communications, and his son, Tim, the
company's chief financial officer. They were convicted on multiple
charges of securities fraud, conspiracy to commit bank fraud and bank
fraud. Jonathan Pollard, the American convicted of spying for Israel more than two decades ago. Omar Abdel-Rahman, also known as the blind sheik, who was sentenced to
life in prison in 1995 for his role in a plot to kill Egyptian
President Hosni Mubarak and blow up New York City landmarks, including
the United Nations. He was sentenced to life in prison in 1995 and
moved to Butner in 2007.
Wow, he'll have some groovy housemates, won't he? I wonder if he even "gets" what he did to people's lives.
Interesting; thanks.
