Will you be observing Earth Hour at 8 pm on Saturday, March 29th? I just learned of this global turn-off-the-lights-reduce-your-carbon-footprint action. Apparently it originated in Sydney, AU last year. For one hour in 2007, citizens of the Sydney turned off all their lights for one hour, and dubbed it "Earth Hour."
One hour? This is a sacrifice?
From the Earth Hour website:
"If the greenhouse reduction achieved in the Sydney CBD during Earth Hour was sustained for a year, it would be equivalent to taking 48,616 cars off the road for a year."
Sheesh, in Atlanta we'd hardly even notice 48,616 fewer cars. So I guess you could say I'm pretty uninspired by this one, even though Atlanta is one of the Eastern Time Zone cities participating in Earth Hour.
“Earth Hour is a way to bring focus and attention to how we might save energy,” said Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin. “It gives us an opportunity to participate in a worldwide event to highlight the necessity of all of us to save energy. But also according to our mayor, "In Atlanta, lights for health and public safety will remain on."
The time for Earth Hour is 8:00 pm EST, in the United States. I don't think it can hurt to turn out your lights, but I don't really think it will help either. Or maybe just buy the t-shirt and put a little cash in the Earth Hour coffers. Me, I'd rather recycle and compost.
Howdy -- picked you up from Bossy. Just saying hi. And that I may try to compensate for Earth Hour by turning on every light I have. I'm a bit unbalanced this year.
Cheers!
