I have never watched The Wire, but the critics say it's the greatest TV series ever. It's not that I don't watch TV or that I scorn HBO series. I have been devoted to Six Feet Under, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Sex and The City, The Office, Arrested Development and The Sopranoes. Mid-season this year I got fatally hooked on Tell Me That You Love Me. So it's not that I'm some kind of anti-TV high brow...trust me, I like it all.
What have I been missing? I've never watched Gray's Anatomy. I never got into Lost. I kinda like House, but haven't kept up with it.
So here's the quiz. I have a limited amount of time for TV. I can choose just one series to watch all the way through. Should it be:
1. Gray's Anatomy
2. Lost
3. The Wire
4. CSI
5. House
6. Other ?
Lost and House. You would LOVE House. We have the first two seasons on DVD and it's one of my favorite shows.
Lost, well you would have to catch up, but it's my absolute favorite show. LOVE IT. But you would have to slog through at least the last season for it to make much sense, and every episode reveals just a tiny bit about the storyline.
Grays sucks now. Don't even bother.

HOUSE - I got hooked on an airplane when they showed 3 episodes back to back. Rented the first two seasons on dvd (never did that before) and love it for its writing.
BTW - I would also add Boston Legal -- another funny and very intelligent show. Aside from those, I stick to CNN.

For light fun and a few laughts, try the Old Adventures of New Christine with Julia Louis Dreyfuss.I think the new season starts in the next week or so. The new HBO show In Treatment starts next week with Gabriel Byrne as a shrink. I think it is on nightly. Also, rent Rescue Me, starring Dennis Leary(FX) and catch up. As a NYer, you will enjoy it. It more about relationships inside and outside the firehouse than putting out fires. Very well written.

PS - I'm looking forward to HBO's newest shoe: "In Treatment" - starts tomorrow (Monday) night at 9:30 - previews are glowing - stars Gabriel Byrne as a pscyhotherapist...
