Joseph Skibell: The English Disease
Mordantly funny novel of self loathing, Jewish identity and dare I say "redemption?" Well worth your time.
Joyce Maynard: At Home in the World: A Memoir
I've had mixed feelings about Maynard since her debut at 18, but reading this memoir, compassion and insight bring me to true admiration. If you ever wondered wtf is up with J.D. Salinger, read this!
Kathryn Stockett: The Help
Great read, tender and true. I can see the movie coming!
Saul Bellow: Henderson the Rain King
Reading this for Kathryn Legan's amazing class on Saul Bellow. Did you know it's all about the true self?
Jay Cantor: Great Neck
Big sprawling hot mess of a novel about 5 friends growing up in GN during the 60's. Plot covers coming of age, coming out, the Holocaust, civil rights, black power and the Weather Underground. I'm absolutely loving this panoramic look back that delves so knowingly into the pretensions of the upper middle class Jewish intelligensia. . . of which I'm a card carrying member. :-)
Greg Mortenson: Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time
Just plain fascinating and inspiring.
Jhumpa Lahiri: Unaccustomed Earth: Stories (Vintage Contemporaries)
Melancholy collection of stories about Indian families coping with expectations in America.
Amy Bloom: Away: A Novel
Thank god for this improbable little novel. It kept me from killing someone as I sat on the tarmac in Philly for hours on Sunday. Preposterous plot, great characters and very well written.
Alyse Myers: Who Do You Think You Are?: A Memoir
Spare and moving memoir of a dark, angry mother and her spirited daughter.
Curtis Sittenfeld: American Wife: A Novel
Thinly disguised account that wonders what a Laura Bush-type First Lady is really thinking.
Sounds so fun! Nina, it would be a good night to get together a group to come to Limmud NY 2010 - Jan 15-18, 2009 - We'd love have y'all. http://register.limmudny.org
